This was a two and a half week competition for a new Church in Ørestad, a new suburb of Copenhagen. We were given the original competition brief from a few years ago, and told that we could either follow the brief, or to question it. I chose to challenge it completely.
The Ørestad masterplan has been put on hold for the foreseeable future and the site is currently a construction site with only the infrastructure completed.
Since the masterplan is now redundant, I created a community orientated corridor that runs along the central axis. This expands out into the proposed masterplan and will provide a new school, library and a sports centre.
At the end of the axis is the church that extends out into the fields beyond. The church will also provide a multi-purpose hall, a kindergarden and a cafe for the community.
These facilities will initially be used by the greater community on the other side of the metro tracks. When the masterplan is revisited in the future, it will adapt and embrace the community buildings, which will ensure that the community is at the heart of the new town.
